Burn.Fit is a workout tracker and strength training planner designed to help users meet their fitness goals. As the Marketing Manager at BurnFit, I identified opportunities to improve the social sharing and YouTube workout features based on user feedback. After presenting research insights and wireframe proposals, we prioritized these enhancements, leading to over 20,000 Instagram hashtags and propelling the app into the top 20 in its category.
Impact
Many users want to share workout summaries, progress, and photos, but often struggle to integrate fitness apps with social media. This challenge became more prominent as home workouts surged during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, according to the Korea Consumer Agency, mentions of 'home workout' on social media increased by 112.7%, while YouTube videos and views on the topic grew by over 150%, creating a greater need for fitness apps to log these sessions.
To gather insights, we launched the "BurnFit Challenge," where 300 participants used the social sharing feature for a month. This campaign revealed key user pain points and preferences:

User Flexibility
To address the need for varied workout logging, we developed the Burn.Fit Log based on user research. Users wanted options to customize how they track their workouts, so we created four distinct templates, each designed for different preferences—tracking sets, reps, time, or weight.
For users who work out multiple times a day, we added a dynamic log that adjusts its length automatically, making the experience more seamless.
For the Photo Log feature, user feedback indicated a need for better customization and legibility. To solve this, we allowed users to freely move and place workout records on images and introduced a color overlay behind the text, ensuring visibility without compromising the photo.
Recognizing social media trends, particularly on Instagram, we expanded image size options beyond the default 1:1 ratio to 4:5, the preferred size for Instagram posts. This flexibility lets users crop images as they see fit after capturing them.
Encouraging Achievement and Sharing
We redesigned the post-workout summary to motivate users to share their progress. Instead of a plain calendar entry, we created visually appealing graphics with workout details and a prominent share button. This shift encouraged immediate sharing, making the experience both rewarding and shareable.
Users can save or share directly to social media in three different formats.
Streamlined YouTube Integration
Understanding the surge in home workouts during COVID-19, we simplified the process of logging YouTube workouts. Users can now save videos with a single link.
We also created a video library that automatically stores saved content. To enhance user engagement, we added a recommendation system, offering top YouTube videos based on exercise type and keywords.
